Classroom Procedures
- Coming in: wait until I’ve opened the door and/or the previous class leaves. Do not crowd the door or the hallway; stand off to one side and allow people to pass.
- Within the first 10 minutes of class...
- Students should come into the room in an orderly manner.
- Students should get situated and use the first 5 minutes of class to take care of any business with organization or with me.
- Leaving: No packing up books to go until the alarm goes off to end class; it’s a distraction.
- Bathroom breaks: Just put your name on the board and go, BUT DO NOT ABUSE THIS PRIVILEGE or you will ruin this policy for everyone. Most of the time, there will be no more than one student at a time going, and there will be no more than 4 consecutive asks (no potty parades). If it becomes a problem, we’ll rethink this, but as long as no one abuses this practice, we'll all get to go when we need to.
- If you are gone longer than 5 minutes, I will mark you as unexcused tardy for class which is a deduction of participation points.
- Drinks/snacks: I don't mind drinks and food, BUT here are some restrictions:
- Messes sometimes happen, but DO NOT leave them for me to clean up. Students who leave messes will be required to clean the room during the next break.
- No drinks or food during tests.
- No crackling of food wrappers or loud crunchy foods during lessons or work time.
- The area around my desk and file cabinets is off limits to students.
- During group work or class work, you will speak to one another in a low voice. We do not want to disturb other classes, nor do we want to be so loud that we can’t hear each other. The light strip around the bulletin board on the back wall will change color if the noise level gets too loud:
- Multicolor: Everything's good. Color lights are pretty.
- Level 1 warning: Green
- Level 2 warning: Blue
- Level 3 warning and silence: Yellow
- Level 4 whole class snack detention: Red
- If you finish classwork early, you can browse on your Chromebook as you wish as long as your content stays appropriate for those around you. You cannot be on your phone unless I've explicitly said you can be.
Lunch
We will begin to head down to the lunchroom no earlier than three minutes before scheduled lunchtime. You will enter and exit through the doorway in the new side of the lunchroom. DO NOT walk through the middle school or elementary building unless you are seeing the nurse before you eat. You should ask for permission to go to the restroom if you need to use it while we're there. With that being said, coming back from lunch should take no longer than three to five minutes. Take care of your eating and restroom needs during lunch or on the way back. If you are not back in the classroom on time, you will be marked with an unexcused tardy. Do NOT leave a mess in the lunchroom. You are old enough to clean up after yourself. Failure to do so will result in you cleaning the entire lunchroom at the direction of the lunchroom staff.
In the event of a substitute...
You will conduct business as usual. The sub will have your class assignment instructions.
Treat the sub as you would treat me. Do what he/she tells you to do. If the sub has ANY PROBLEMS from individual students, he/she will let me know. If I get a note that he/she had a hard time with any of my classes, the entire class in question will have consequences including a SUBSTANTIAL deduction of conduct points. Be on your best behavior, and treat the substitute with respect. The sub will have the authority to take conduct points.
